In James 1:27 we read, "Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you."

We visited Kenya in the winter of 2006 working with Evans Barasa in the Bible School that we had planted together. Upon arriving at his home, we found 13 of these children whose parents had died of AIDS or were abandoned.

Evans and Consolata and the family took these children, acting out the Scripture above. It is quite an undertaking to take this many children and be responsible for school fees, medicine, food and all that it takes to care for them.

For the Barasas, it meant a lot of sacrifice. They already had three teenagers in higher education that is required to be paid for and not free and one younger child at home. They had already adopted two other children whose parents died of AIDS, and now 13 more were added.

We could see the toll it was taking on their finances, energy and emotions. How could we help?

If we could gather families together and each family contribute just $10 a month, we could make a difference in the lives of this family. After all, they have 95% of the work taking care of these children and we have the easy part of just blessing them with the funds to help.

That is just what we did. By joining together with each family contributing $10, we have been able to send enough on a monthly basis to help support these children and being to build a house for them to live in.
